What the study measured

Productrise tracked more than 100,000 identical shopping queries and over two million product listings across 21 days in July 2026, in the US and UK — the two markets where Google's Shopping Graph currently feeds AI Mode. Standard search returned at least one product listing on roughly 88% of queries, averaging 22.5 listings per results page. AI Mode returned a product on roughly 23% of the same queries, averaging 4.3 listings — about 95% fewer product placements overall.

The number that matters is 0.8%

The headline stat is the 95% reduction, but the finding that should change how you plan is the overlap: only about 0.8% of products visible in standard search also appeared in AI Mode for the same query on the same day. If AI Mode were simply a trimmed-down Shopping feed, the few products it shows would be the top performers from standard results. They are not. AI Mode is drawing a largely different slice of the same catalog — which means your Shopping rank, however good, does not carry over.

Treat that as the working definition of the new surface: same catalog, different selection logic, near-zero inheritance from the rankings you already earned.

What this means for your store

Treat AI Mode as its own surface

Audit your feed the way an answer engine reads it: every optional attribute filled, GTINs present, variants complete. Sparse feed records that still perform in Shopping are exactly the listings most likely to be invisible here.

Make the page, the feed, and the markup agree

Google has said there is no precedence order when your page, your structured data, and your feed disagree — conflicts simply cost confidence. Three-way consistency on price, availability, and identifiers is the cheapest AI-visibility work you can do.

Measure it before you react to it

Merchant Center's AI performance report and Search Console's generative-AI reporting show whether your products actually appear on AI surfaces. Get a baseline before spending anything — a 23% product-presence rate means many queries in your category may show no products at all yet.

Do not pull back from Shopping

Standard results still return products on 88% of queries and carry the volume. AI Mode visibility is additive work on the same catalog data, not a replacement channel — the stores that win both will be the ones that treated feed quality as one job, not two.

Where this study is limited

The study used keyword-style queries rather than conversational prompts, which likely undercounts how AI Mode behaves in real use. It covers only the US and UK, the two Shopping-Graph markets, over a 21-day window — and it is one tracker's crawl, not Google's own data. Directional conclusions hold; precise percentages will move.
