3 apps at launch: Instacart, Canva, YouTube Music

What happened

Google started rolling out Connected Apps in AI Mode for US users the week of July 16. Three services are live at launch: Instacart, Canva, and YouTube Music. Ask AI Mode to help work through a grocery list and it can add the ingredients to an Instacart cart. Ask for flyer ideas and Canva hands back template options. Ask for music and YouTube Music builds and saves the playlist. The search result stops being a list of links and starts being a completed errand.

The plumbing is Model Context Protocol — the open standard for wiring AI systems to outside tools. That detail matters more than the launch list. MCP means almost any service could technically connect; Google decides who actually does. Google says it's working with a range of partners and expects to launch more apps soon, but it hasn't named them — and it hasn't explained how a company joins that set, or whether a broader integration route is coming.

There's precedent for the move. Google added connected apps to the Gemini app earlier this year, so the pattern was already proven in a chatbot. Bringing it to AI Mode moves the same behavior into the search surface itself, where the shopping queries live.

Why this matters

Each connector changes what AI Mode is. A search page sends you somewhere else to act; a dispatch layer acts for you. The Instacart integration is the tell — a grocery transaction can now start, and mostly finish, inside a Google answer. That's the transaction path being assembled in public, one partner at a time, and nobody selling online should assume their category is exempt.

For stores, the near-term job doesn't move an inch. You still want to be the source AI Mode cites when a shopper researches your category, because every handoff to a connected app starts from an answer somebody had to supply. What changes is the stakes of the medium term. When a commerce app gets a connector — a marketplace, a delivery platform, a shopping aggregator — the click you were counting on gets shorter, and whoever owns the connector owns the handoff.

Worth some skepticism, too. An invite-only guest list favors big aggregators over individual merchants — Instacart got a connector; the grocers inside Instacart got an intermediary. Until Google opens a route in, most stores can't connect at all, which makes citations, not connectors, the only door currently open to you. And a rollout of three lifestyle apps is a signal, not an earthquake — the commerce version of this is still an announcement away.

What to do about it

Watch the connector list, monthly

Put a recurring reminder on someone's calendar to check coverage of new Connected Apps partners. Instacart going first tells you errand-completion was the priority; the first marketplace or shopping app to land a connector is your signal that product transactions are moving inside AI Mode, and that's the moment your channel math changes.

Keep earning the citation

Run your ten most valuable buyer queries through AI Mode each month and log whether your pages get cited. The handoff to any connected app still starts from an answer — being the source that answer quotes is the position that survives every connector announcement Google makes.

Get your product data agent-ready before you're asked

MCP is an open standard, so an open route in may eventually exist. Complete product attributes, Product schema that agrees with the visible page, and specs written as real HTML text are the entry requirements you can meet now, before there's a queue. Stores that wait for the invitation will be doing this work under deadline pressure.
