What happened
Google started a gradual rollout of AI content labels across Google Ads, Display & Video 360, Campaign Manager 360, Merchant Center, and Ads Editor. You can add text or visual AI labels directly to eligible image and video creatives, or flip on a new AI label setting — and Google may apply labels automatically to assets built with its own AI tools. Wherever the ad runs, the label surfaces as an AI disclosure icon.
PPC specialist Hana Kobzova spotted the rollout in accounts across Google Ads, Merchant Center, and Ads Editor, including a new AI Label column that shows whether labeling is enabled. The labels get a carve-out from existing policies against text overlays and watermarks on creatives, so adding one won't trip a disapproval.
The driver is regulation: AI-transparency rules landing in the EU, India, and New York. And Google is unusually direct about the limits — using the AI label setting alone does not guarantee compliance with local regulations, and advertisers should get legal guidance where needed. The switch is a tool, not a shield.
Why this matters
The auto-labeling clause is the part to sit with. If Google may label assets made with its own AI tools without asking, then advertisers leaning on Google's asset generation — which Performance Max actively encourages — could find disclosure icons on their ads whether they opted in or not. Better to know your exposure before the icon shows up on its own.
Disclosure is about to become a performance variable. Nobody has real data yet on whether a visible AI icon changes click-through or conversion behavior — does it read as honesty, as cheapness, or does nobody notice at all? You want that answer from your own account before industry studies settle the argument, because your customers may not behave like the average.
Merchant Center's inclusion is the piece ecommerce stores should notice. Product imagery is exactly where AI editing has crept in quietly — background swaps, lifestyle composites, upscaled shots. If labeling reaches Shopping surfaces broadly, the line between AI-edited and AI-generated stops being academic and starts being a feed-management decision.
What to do about it
Inventory your AI-touched creative now
List every live asset that an AI tool generated or meaningfully edited — video, display, product imagery. Include assets Google's own tools produced inside Performance Max, since those are the ones Google may auto-label. You can't manage disclosure you haven't mapped.
Find the AI Label column in your account
Check Google Ads, Merchant Center, and Ads Editor for the new column and note what's enabled. The rollout is gradual, so absence today means nothing about next month. When it lands, record which assets carry labels and whether you applied them or Google did.
Get a legal read if you sell into the EU, India, or New York
Google put the caveat in writing: the setting alone doesn't guarantee compliance. If those jurisdictions are in your shipping zones or your targeting, the disclosure question belongs with counsel, not with whoever happens to manage the ad account.
Split performance by labeled vs unlabeled creative
Segment reporting as soon as you have both populations in the account. If the disclosure icon moves CTR or conversion rate in either direction, that finding shapes your entire creative pipeline — and you'd rather learn it from your own data than from a competitor's case study.
