150+ updates shipped in the Spring '26 Edition

What happened

On June 17, Shopify shipped its Spring '26 Edition — 150+ updates, with the headline features clustered hard around agentic commerce. The centerpiece is Catalog, which auto-enriches product data specifically so it performs on AI shopping channels. Read that carefully: Shopify built a product whose entire job is making merchant data good enough for machines to sell from.

The rest of the agentic slate is just as pointed. Checkout is now embedded in Microsoft Copilot via the Universal Commerce Protocol, meaning a shopper can buy inside a Copilot conversation. Shopify opened Catalog, Cart, and Checkout MCPs, so AI agents can query products, build carts, and complete purchases programmatically.

Then there's the strangest one: an "Agentic Plan" for merchants who don't run on Shopify at all. Shopify is selling its agentic rails to stores on other platforms. When a company starts productizing infrastructure for its non-customers, it's telling you it believes the channel shift is bigger than its own merchant base.

Why this matters

The signal for every platform is identical: clean, complete, structured catalog data is now the on-ramp to AI shopping surfaces. Enrichment isn't a nice-to-have Shopify is bundling — it's the eligibility requirement for being sold by an agent at all. A product with missing attributes, no identifiers, or contradictory variant data simply doesn't get picked up.

If you're on BigCommerce, this isn't a spectator sport. BigCommerce is moving the same direction with Feedonomics and its agentic channel work, and the merchant-side work that pays on both platforms is the same: complete attributes, consistent identifiers, structured product data that agrees with itself everywhere it appears. Nothing about that requires replatforming. All of it requires effort most catalogs haven't had.

A dose of honesty about the number: 150+ updates is a marketing figure, and most of them are minor. Copilot checkout volume is also completely unproven — nobody can tell you how many people buy through a Microsoft chat window today. But eligibility work is cheap relative to the downside of being invisible when these channels do get volume, and it improves your Shopping ads performance right now either way.

What to do about it

Run a catalog completeness pass

Pull your catalog and score it per SKU: GTINs present, attributes filled, variant data consistent, descriptions unique. On BigCommerce, check custom fields and your Merchant Center feed coverage. The gaps that will block AI channels are the same gaps hurting your Shopping ads today, so this work pays twice.

Bring structured data to parity with your feed

Your schema.org Product markup should say exactly what your feed says — price, availability, identifiers, variants. Agents cross-reference sources, and a mismatch reads as unreliability. Spot-check your top 20 sellers this week; fix the template, not just the pages.

Ask your platform where its agentic rails are

BigCommerce merchants: confirm your Feedonomics feed status and watch the platform's agentic channel announcements rather than Shopify's keynotes. Don't replatform over a press release — the data work transfers, and the platform gap here is smaller than the marketing suggests.
